Trump Killed NYC Congestion Pricing—Good News or a Traffic Nightmare?

Well, it’s official: Trump killed NYC congestion pricing before it even had a chance to begin. For some, this is a victory for driverswho were dreading shelling out an extra $9 per trip just to enter Manhattan. For others, it’s a disaster for public transit and the city’s long-term traffic problem.
So, what happened? Why did Trump stop congestion pricing? And most importantly—does this mean traffic is about to get even worse?Let’s break it all down.

🚦 What Even Is Congestion Pricing?
If you’ve ever driven in Manhattan, you know it’s basically an expensive, never-ending game of bumper cars. NYC had a plan to fix that—well, sort of.
Congestion pricing was supposed to start in June 2024, charging most drivers a $9 toll to enter Manhattan below 60th Street during peak hours. The idea? Reduce traffic, cut pollution, and fund the MTA (because the subway breaking down every other day isn’t ideal).

Trump’s Says: "Congestion Pricing is DEAD. Long Live the King!"
Ah yes, who better to weigh in on NYC’s traffic woes than Donald J. Trump himself?
The Trump administration swooped in and shut the whole thing down, with U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy saying the toll was unfair to working-class commuters. The logic? Charging people extra to drive into the city without giving them a free alternative (like, say, a workingsubway system) wasn’t exactly a popular move.
But of course, Trump didn’t just quietly block the policy. Instead, he took to social media and declared:
“Congestion Pricing is DEAD. Manhattan is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!”
🚘 What This Means for New Yorkers & Drivers
But who cares about government officials, what does it mean for YOU now that congestion pricing is gone? Well…
- Drivers save money → No $9 Tolls.
- Traffic is probably about to get worse - More Gridlock.
- The MTA will (somehow) get WORSE → $1 billion per year in funding GONE.
- Governor Kathy Hochul is suing to get congestion pricing back.
